It is only on become it begins to fall apart, nevertheless the slap-upwards finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can smartly dialogued, it will have zero higher issue in life style down the extremely ugly name.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Film Bulletin told you “The movie actions at the an instant pace, the fresh talk try advanced and characterisations essentially energetic. Richard Brody regarding the The brand new Yorker indexed “That it terse and you will tight film noir is predicated on the latest romantic and you will top-notch issues of your own term profile, the latest criminal mastermind (starred by the Manhood Powell) about a sophisticated illegal casino. The latest film’s blogger and you will manager, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) did within local casino and you will dated a corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic program, the brand new cast’s suavely managed body gestures regarding like and you may possibility, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may fashionably cocky pictures (and additionally his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle an invisible antique of your genre.” [ ten ]

Photo features activity and you may anticipation, and you will particular small joins from laughs to provide style. Ace activities of the Cock Powell, given that a gambling home overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, while the an authorities inspector, as well as up the rating . Whilst area uses a familiar trend, the newest characterizations are new and also the shows good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog are terse and relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney contact. Uncommon cam bases come-along now and then to help you escalate appeal and temporarily stop the eye. Solid teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling as the manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, unique author and you may member music producer, plus aids in making this a flaccid development.” [ eleven ]

It is generally a point of enjoying Mr. Powell undergo his paces smartly when you find yourself a huge shed out-of actors and you can actresses render your typical assistance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable little woman just who brings out the fresh new best in him and Ellen Received ‘s the easy and you may slinky vixen which gets your with the jams. Thomas Gomez try oily since the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do yet another ready trip once the a tired police inspector whom in the end shuts the fact. Many ingesting and you may smoking is performed because of the the worried.” [ twelve ]
