Cobb), and you will a scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) did within gambling enterprise and you will old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic program, the cast’s suavely controlled body language out-of love and you can threat, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will fashionably cocky images (and their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of one’s category.” [ ten ]

Cobb, since the an authorities inspector, as well as within the score . Even though the area observe a common pattern, the newest characterizations is actually new together with performances good enough so you can overbalance. Evelyn Keyes plays the good little lady exactly who brings about new finest in him and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and you may slinky vixen exactly who gets him to the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty once the villain and Lee J. Cobb do another type of ready tour as an exhausted police inspector who ultimately closes the case. A great deal of consuming and you may puffing is accomplished from the every concerned.” [ twelve ]
